Into Desolate Realms is the 13th full-length album from the long-running Runemagick and as death/doom is one of the last unexplored metal frontiers for me, the time seemed right when it dropped into my review queue. I can appreciate the dark, epic atmosphere the band creates throughout the album and some of the song titles hint at potential greatness ("The Opening of Dead Gates", "Necromancer of the Red Sun"). The power in Runemagick's riffs and vocal lines is undeniable but none ever clicked for me, not one lick, not one chorus, nothing. Fans of the band or style in general may think I'm crazy (a supposition not entirely without merit), but the 70+ minutes of Into Desolate Realms just went by uneventfully and took its sweet time doing so. If there is a reason out there for me to "get" death/doom, it doesn't appear to be on Into Desolate Realms.
