This is the second full-length album from Sonata Arctica and if you were worried about a sophomore slump I can alleviate your fears. This is one of the best melodic power metal albums to be released so far this year. Sonata Arctica hail from Finland and even though they are playing metal in a very crowded genre this is a band that with this release will definitely move up to the hierarchy of the upper echelon of bands like Gamma Ray, Stratovarius and Blind Guardian. From beginning to end this album is just filled to the breaking point with great songs. With 13 tracks and a running time of 62 minutes you will definitely be getting your money's worth. Excellent musicianship abounds on this release and the songwriting is even better than on the debut, "Ecliptica". I thought the debut was excellent as well but this release just blows the debut away. There isn't one thing about this album that I didn't like which is quite unusual considering if you look hard enough you can always find something that you didn't care for…:). The praise this band has received in the last couple of years from being named newcomer of the year in Hard n' Heavy magazine as well as being nominated in the Finnish version of the Grammy's, you would think some of this would have translated into some serious pressure. All I can say is if this is the kind of material this band can come up with while under pressure just keep the damn pressure on…:) Overall I would say if you are a fan of the power metal genre or just have a passing interest this is a must have disc. Highly Recommended!! Track by track There isn't a weak track on the entire disc. |
