Here we have the much-anticipated fifth album from Krisiun, and I have to say it is a major disappointment. I really liked "Ageless Venomous", despite the crappy snare drum sound. It had some great riffing and some killer solos. The album previous--"Conquerors of Armageddon", was even better than that, as it had a better production and stronger songs. We were all hoping Krisiun could record an album as good as those two with even better production. Well, no such luck. Oh, the production is fine, as the drums no longer sound like cardboard boxes. But the songwriting is blah, and the album as a whole feels extremely half-assed. Let's see: we have a 32 minute album with a cover song and three instrumentals. That means you are only getting 8 actual Krisiun songs, clocking it at juuuuust over 24 minutes. That's right, 24 minutes of original music that claims to be an album. There are bands that produce EP's longer than this. This is just as heavy and brutal as we would expect from Krisiun, well-played and executed with conviction. But most of the songs are under the 3 minute mark, and so never get the time to get any sort of vibe going. These songs all sound pretty much the same, too--built on those spiraling-scale riffs Krisiun always write. None of this is bad, but nothing stands out as good either. Overall "Works Of Carnage" comes across as a sadly lacking effort from a band who can do better. It feels rushed and half-finished, and I really resent paying full price for only half an album. Skip it. |
