Third album for this Finnish band, and I may be late to the party, but I think this is pretty fucking cool. Like a lot of bands these days, Mausoleum Gate are digging in on a retro sound, but they are going right past the storied '80s and grabbing that smoky, occult '70s sound instead. Singer Jarno Saarinen sounds a good bit like classic Ozzy (and is not trying to avoid it) but the rest of the sound here is not Sabbathy at all, instead pulling from stuff like Witchfinder General or maybe most strongly evoking Pagan Altar shit like The Time Lord. Every track here is an occult workout in grooving guitar and keyboard riffs backed by an organic recording job and a powerful sense of mood. Good stuff. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
