I haven't listened to a Rhapsody of Fire album in years. I think it was before they added "of Fire." I bought the EP that came out after Dawn of Victory and that was it for me except for the DVD back in 2005. So, if you're looking for a review by someone who's kept up with them through the past 14 years or so, check out MetalMike's review. ;) Unsurprisingly, these guys still go all out with their busy symphonic power metal. Yes, it's flowery—a bit too much at times—but it's almost impossible not to tap your foot through nearly the entire length of the album, especially with the double bass that, I see, is still working overtime after all these years. I am pleased to see that the new singer can deliver the goods with a very melodic, powerful enough voice that just invites you to sing along. I still consider their first three albums some, if not the best albums in symphonic power metal and those were so damn catchy that just thinking of the titles, some of the songs start playing in my head even though I haven't listened to them in a long time. I'm not getting that with The Eighth Mountain. There are bits and pieces here and there that are memorable but, for the most part, there's nothing left when it's over. Your mileage may vary, and either way that doesn't deter from the fact that these guys are still really good at what they do. It's over the top, it's flowery feel-good metal, and that's what we expect from them. Good stuff. |
