I have to give this band a certain amount of credit, because this is their fifteenth album, and of their old lineup from their glory days, only keyboard player Alex Staropoli remains, with everybody else being (relatively) new. Egomaniac Luca Turilli is long gone, and ubiquitous vocalist Fabio Lione is now in Angra, so a lot of the things that gave this band their signature sound have changed, and yet they sound like they always have. Normally I like at least a little progression, but I have to hand it to Rhapsody for still playing the same heavily orchestrated, symphonic double-bass Power Metal they have always played, even though the trends have moved on so much that their sound now almost qualifies as retro. This is generally better than I have found their stuff to be ever since they were forced to change their name. I still think Rhapsody "of Fire" sounds tremendously stupid, but while their early albums under the name were pretty thin and uninspired, this one is stronger, with better melodies, better vocal lines, and songwriting that is so similar to their old days that only the lack of Lione's distinctive tone allows it to be distinguished at all. This is still not really amazing, and as always, I love the idea of Rhapsody better than the actual article, but this is an album I can listen to and I don't want to shut it off. I can't say that about Triumph or Agony or The Frozen Tears of Angels. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
