You can always count on Rhapsody of Fire to make EPs that are the length of an album. I'll Be Your Hero includes the title track, a rerecording of "Where Dragons Fly", live versions of "Rain of Fury" and "The Courage to Forgive" and... four, yes, four versions of "The Wind, the Rain and the Moon" in English, Italian, Spanish and French. I prefer the band's fast, over-the-top symphonic stuff and there's a good serving on that in the first half, the new song being what you expect from Rhapsody of Fire and really sets high expectations for the EP which, I must say, were met with the rerecording and the two live songs that follow. Where things fell apart is the choice to have this end with four versions of a ballad—that's over 21 minutes of the same song. It's a beautiful song that fits well somewhere in the middle of an album, but four times in a row and ending an album-length EP, that's just. No. Non. Nyet. Nada. As far as I'm concerned, that puts the EP into "for die-hards only" category and others, especially newcomers to the band, will be better served starting with something else. With that said, I can hit "stop" after the first version and there's a new album in the works, so definitely looking forward to that. |
